The PhD in Special Education provides students with core and tailored coursework in evidenced-based practices, research, and college teaching/supervision in preparation for careers in academic, research, and clinical settings.

The Special Education PhD program prepares students for leadership positions in higher education, research settings, educational agencies, human service agencies, and clinical agencies. The degree program is competency-based with specific emphasis on research and teaching. Programs of study are collaboratively designed by the student, faculty advisor, and advisory committee. All students take coursework in research design, statistics, core discipline content, and student-selected areas of emphasis. The degree culminates in the completion of a dissertation.

The graduate faculty are known nationally and internationally as researchers, educators, clinicians, and collaborators in subspeciality areas across the field of special education. Students benefit from this expertise through high quality evidence-based instruction, mentored research, independent research opportunities, and outreach to the community.
