UGA Alumni Association Names 40 Under 40 Class

The University of Georgia Alumni Association has unveiled the 40 Under 40 Class of 2021. This program celebrates the personal, professional and philanthropic achievements of successful UGA graduates under the age of 40. The honorees will be recognized during the 11th annual 40 Under 40 Awards Luncheon Sept. 10 in the Tate Student Center on campus.

Nine former graduate students received the honor:

PhD Candidate Ale Villegas and Advisor Vasant Muralidharan Receive Gilliam Graduate Fellowship Award

Malaria’s connection to Georgia goes back to the colonial period. The Southeastern United States provided prime conditions for a thriving mosquito population which ensured the spread of the disease. The state capital moved from Louisville to Milledgeville in 1806 in part because of malaria outbreaks among the state’s General Assembly.

Later, the federal Office of Malaria Control in War Areas was established in Atlanta instead of Washington D.C. because of its proximity to malaria. Recent NIH Funding to Support Improvement & Research of Graduate Mentoring

The National Institutes for Health awarded supplemental funding to UGA’s T32 Training Grant, Genetics Training Program, directed by Dr. Kelly Dyer in the Department of Genetics. This award is the second supplemental for the Genetics Training Program; both supplements are to support the improvement of graduate research mentorship. Postdoctoral associate, Dr. Heather Fedesco, is leading the effort in collaboration with Dr. Erin Dolan, Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. Their work will significantly expand capacity to understand what is working (or not) in graduate research mentorship at UGA, especially in STEM disciplines, and to make improvements over time.

Violeta Rodriguez Honored With P.E.O. Scholar Award

Violeta Rodriguez, a Ph.D. candidate in Psychology at University of Georgia, is one of 100 doctoral students in the U. S. and Canada selected to receive a $20,000 Scholar Award from the P.E.O. Sisterhood.  She was sponsored by Chapter BL of Gainesville, Georgia.


Violeta is originally from Nicaragua. She moved the the U.S. with her family when she was nine-years old as asylees. She grew up in Miami, Fla.

Violeta’s research focuses on the psychometrics of parenting and family constructs, with an emphasis on making parenting and family measures more representative of diverse families. This research has been recognized by the Psychological Association … read more
