Degree Type: Masters

Degree Program Code: MA_ARHI

Degree Program Summary:

The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia offers graduate study in art education, art history, and studio art. The programs, leading to the M.A., M.A.Ed., M.F.A., Ed.S., and Ph.D. degrees, prepare students for a variety of careers within the arts and are described in detail in the Graduate Handbook.

Graduate-level coursework in Art History is divided between small, advanced lecture courses and intimate seminars on highly specialized topics. The curriculum, which students navigate with the help of a faculty advisor, gives students the specialized skills required by the discipline of art history, while ensuring mastery across a range of art-historical topics. Students in the MA program in art history work closely with faculty mentors and must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a foreign language, pass a written general examination in art history, and pass a final oral examination. A written thesis is required for those on “thesis track.”

The Georgia Museum of Art is a significant resource for the School of Art. It has a major collection of American paintings and over 5000 works on paper from all periods. The museum sponsors a full schedule of in-house and traveling exhibitions each year.
