Degree Program Summary:

This department prepares high-quality educators for elementary, middle and high school levels. Scholars and educators within this department help shape the theory and praxis that guides literacy education, English education, foreign language education and English as a second language education. The department boasts a strong heritage of research in and promotion of language and reading skills. Crucial research within this department continuously contributes to the development of answers to the new challenges facing students and teachers in the 21st century regarding discourse. Department faculty have been nationally recognized for expertise within language and literacy development and education. Many have published their research and theories in books and professional journals, and have presented research findings in national conferences in areas such as critical literacy, methodology, social construction of literacy, situated learning, children’s and young adult literature, language acquisition, foreign language acquisition, discourse analysis, and teacher preparation.

M.Ed. in Teaching Additional Languages

Purpose of the M.Ed. in Teaching Additional Languages

The program is designed for students who want advanced professional preparation and study in teaching foreign or additional languages to children, adolescents, or adults in the U.S. or abroad. A wide range of program offerings and electives accommodates student needs and interests.

Please note: This program does NOT provide initial certification to teach foreign languages in U.S. public schools. If you are seeking initial certification to teach in Georgia K-12 schools, please see information on the “MED Plus Certification” program.

The program consists of 36 credit hours or 12 courses in teaching methods, second language acquisition, English language study, literacy, cultural awareness, and research methods.

M.Ed. in TESOL: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Purpose of the M.Ed.

The program is designed for students seeking advanced professional preparation and study in teaching English as a second or additional language to children, adolescents, or adults in the U.S. or abroad. A wide range of program offerings and electives accommodates student needs and interests.
