The MSAI prepares students for careers as AI developers, or for PhD study, blending computer science, linguistics, philosophy and psychology, emphasizing cutting edge areas. Students complete courses and a research-based thesis, normally in 2 years.
Degree Type: Masters
Degree Program Code: MS_ARTI
Degree Program Summary:
The Artificial Intelligence Center is an interdepartmental research and instructional center within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Georgia. Strengths include logic programming, expert systems, neural nets, genetic algorithms, natural language processing, and computational psycholinguistics.
The interdisciplinary Master of Science program in artificial intelligence is intended to prepare students for careers as developers of artificial intelligence applications or for further graduate work in artificial intelligence or related areas. The program includes foundational courses in computer science, linguistics, logic, philosophy, and psychology as well as specialized courses in artificial intelligence programming languages and techniques. Seminars emphasize knowledge based systems, natural language understanding, and logic programming.
Students are admitted to the program with degrees in many areas including business, computer science, education, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology. A liberal undergraduate education with some previous experience in computing is desirable. Most students must take a few undergraduate courses to satisfy prerequisites for required graduate courses. The required graduate courses are listed under their respective departments. Typically, required courses include: symbolic programming, artificial intelligence, symbolic logic, logic programming, and any two from knowledge based systems, computational intelligence, natural language processing, and computer vision / pattern recognition. Additional course requirements are satisfied by selecting optional courses. It normally takes two years to complete all prerequisites, all required courses, and the thesis.
