Kate Sabey wins P.E.O. Scholar Award

Kate Sabey, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Infectious Diseases at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine at UGA, is one of 100 doctoral students nationwide selected to receive a $15,000 Scholar Award from the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was sponsored by Chapter M of Athens, GA.

Sabey is a graduate of Juniata College where she explored the role of gut microbiome in human gastrointestinal disease. After graduation, she completed an internship at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park before returning to Juniata College, where she served as an adjunct laboratory instructor and research associate.

Now a member of Dr. Vanessa Ezenwa’s lab, Sabey’s dissertation research combines her interests in genomics, disease ecology, and veterinary medicine, investigating how the gut microbiome is related to infectious disease processes in African wildlife. She is also a member of the Interdisciplinary Disease Ecology Across Scales (IDEAS) program.

The P.E.O. Scholar Awards (PSA) was established in 1991 to provide substantial merit-based awards for women of the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral level degree at an accredited college or university.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is a philanthropic educational organization interested in bringing increased opportunities for higher education to women. There are approximately 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with nearly a quarter of a million active members.
