UGA enrolls over 9,300 graduate students housed in a variety of colleges, schools, institutes, departments, programs, and certificates across five campuses. Graduate students are a varied group, including students who study full-time, part-time, and online, sometimes in addition to professional work. To meet the needs of diverse student groups, graduate programs will likely employ a variety of strategies and tools to promote holistic student success.
Using Data to Identify Opportunities
Data maintained by the Office of Institutional Research can provide insight into aggregate enrollment by campus, characteristics, residency, time-to-degree, as well as degrees conferred. GradSlate can provide individual and aggregated student data such as matriculation term, enrollment data, academic standing, GPA, leaves of absence, advisory committees, and student awards and honors. The Career Center’s Career Outcomes Initiative provides data on students’ employment, salary, and continuing education status. In addition, programs may benefit from other methods to obtain student feedback, including annual, climate, and exit surveys.
Using the Student Lifecycle Approach
Building initiatives to support student success includes understanding the graduate student lifecycle. The timeline generally consists of three stages (Early, Middle, and Late), each with distinct goals and desired outcomes. Maximizing student success at each stage can include instructional practices, policies, and trainings.
