The Graduate Certificate in Substance Use Counseling is designed for students currently working towards a graduate degree at UGA and non-degree seeking students with an interest in substance use counseling who have earned a graduate degree elsewhere.

Degree Program Summary:
The purpose of the Certificate Program in Substance Use Counseling is to train students to be competent in the delivery of quality care for those affected by substance use. In this program, students will be trained to 1) develop advanced evidence-based treatment competencies and 2) develop a comprehensive knowledge of the bio-psycho-social dynamics associated with substance use. Upon satisfactory completion of the Certificate Program, graduates will have received all required educational hours and content to be eligible for Certified Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CAADC) licensure in the state of Georgia. The program is supported by a nationally recognized multidisciplinary group of faculty and practitioners who are experienced in the evidence-based care and treatment of persons with substance use problems.
Completion of the certificate requires 12 semester hours of eligible graduate level courses (four courses). This includes a course that provides an overview of substance use, a course that explores current approaches to substance use treatment, a course on the assessment and treatment of trauma, and a comprehensive course on working with groups.
