Understanding Recruitment
Recruitment is a Continuous Process
Maximizing graduate recruitment starts with understanding the recruitment continuum or cycle, often referred to as the recruitment funnel:
Recruitment begins each year with an at-large population of prospective students (domestic and international) who search the web and social media for graduate programs that meet their professional and personal goals.
These prospects begin their independent search a year or more before their desired semester of matriculation and before contacting prospective programs. A small percentage of prospects will be persuaded by what they see and reach out directly to inquire about specific graduate programs (inquiries).
A limited number of inquiries will begin an application, complete the application (applicants), and be admitted (admits).
The smallest portion of the funnel is the percentage of admitted students (admits) who accept offers of admission and enroll (enrolled).
To maximize recruitment and build new enrollment consistently, programs must employ effective strategies at each stage and recognize that recruitment does not end until accepted students ultimately enroll in your program. Retaining enrollment (Retention) is an important follow-up to your recruitment efforts. To learn more about maximizing retention please visit our resource page for Student Success and Well-Being.
